Bark up the right plant
WITH a mission that sets out to create high performance natural skincare that is “powered by nature an d proven by science”, you can rest assure Origin’s latest product is also created with 100% natural goodness.
Aptly named Plantscription, the serum advances traditional anti-ageing products by combating multiple causes of aging skin, visibly correcting lines and wrinkles, and loss of firmness by rebuilding natural fibrillin, collagen and elastin with the help of key ingredient – African Anogeissus (pronounced an-no-gay-sis).
Researched for over five years in partnership with plant scientists at the University of Strasbourg, France, Dr Lieve Declerq –Origins global spokesperson of plant physiology and molecular biology – discovered the remarkable benefits of this extraordinary ingredient.
“Fibrillin is a critical fibre vital for the elasticity, firmness and plumpness of skin.”
“When it came to supporting and rebuilding natural fibrillin, Anogeissus was amazingly effective. That’s when we got excited about this powerful plant. Its skincare benefits surpassed our expectations,” adds Dr Declerq.

The sacred Anogeissus tree is found in the Republic of Ghana.
Local African tribes harvest the rare extract from the leaves and bark of the Anogeissus tree to use as a natural wound healer and antimicrobial agent.
Origins’ researchers discovered that the bark is particularly concentrated into compounds able to stimulate the natural production of fibrillin.
“Our mission with this product was to go beyond what we have done in the past for visible line and wrinkle correction – the additional step of boosting natural fibrillin production with a natural ingredient,” pronounces Dr Declerq.
In the brief Q & A, the scientist goes more in depth about the serum, described as nature’s anti-ageing solution.
Tell us about new Plantscription Anti ageing serum. What is unique about this product?
This serum advances our anti-ageing offerings by combating multiple causes of ageing skin; it visibly corrects lines and wrinkles, decreases loss of firmness and rebuilds natural collagen, elastin and fibrillin, skin’s critical fibre vital for elasticity, with the help of (its) key ingredient.
What is fibrillin? At what age does it start to decline in skin?
Fibrillin is a glycoprotein that is responsible for the formation of skin’s elastic fibres. It gives skin youthful firmness and “bounce” much like a box spring gives support to a mattress.
It starts to decline between ages 30-40, and it’s a major component to healthy, young looking skin.
What other key ingredients are found in new Plantscription Anti-ageing serum?
In tanden with Anogeissus, siegesbeckia (a small shrub native to eastern Asia) and rosemary extract help protect collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that are needed for healthy, young looking skin.
Together they help to visibly decrease the depth and length of lines and wrinkles while strengthening skin, helping it to become firmer.
With the help of salicylic acid, skin becomes more seamless, soft and smooth.
Additionally, scutellaria root, apple extract, and cucumber extract address and improve skin discoloration.
Explain the clinical and sensory tests performed and their results?
Plantscription was tested in a 20-week study on women ages 42-63 where 12 different parameters including lines, wrinkles, firmness, lifting, clarity, radiance, smoothness, evenness of skin tone, age spots, redness and pore size were biophysically measured. Evaluating dermatologist Dr. Darren Mollick dispensed Plantscription and a leading retinoid prescription to test subjects and clinically graded the results for both.
Board certified independent dermatologist and ethnobiologist Dr. Marcus McFerren reviewed lines, wrinkles, redness, irritation and flakiness results for volunteer panelists. Plantscription received the best line and wrinkle clinical test results in the Origins brand to date. It showed both immediate and long-term results. After only four weeks the serum proved a 51% reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and after 12 weeks:
- 57% clinical reduction of the overall appearance of lines and wrinkles
- 64% clinical improvement in visible skin lifting
- 41% clinical improvement in skin firmness
Additionally, in a consumer study after just four weeks, 83% witnessed a more youthful appearance while 85% saw an improvement in skin radiance.
