Linfox encourages eco-friendly practices at the office and home

As a logistics company dealing in transportation and warehousing of goods, Linfox-Malaysia is aware that its business uses diesel trucks to transport goods.  Therefore, it decided to implement green measures to do its part in preserving the environment.

The company believes that the environment is important for business sustainability.  Its two main areas of concern are reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reduce waste to landfill.  The company’s efforts have shown significant environmental improvement, with green-house gas emissions rate reduced by 28% as well as a marked reduction of waste to landfill.

Linfox believes that manmade greenhouse gases contribute to climate change, resulting in increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters.  By reducing emissions, Linfox believes that it benefits its surrounding community.

Aside from greenhouse gases and waste, the company also implemented water savings and recycling as well as electricity reduction programmes at work.

As part of its efforts to go green , Linfox started an Eco-Drive programme where its fleet drivers and office – based workers are taught the right way to drive to reduce emissions.  The company hopes to inculcate eco-friendly driving habits not only among its fleet drivers, but also on a personal level among its workers.

After completing the programme, staff can take a test online to be certified as eco-drivers.  The response to this has been good, with many staff getting certified.  Translation of  the teaching software into Bahasa Malaysia is currently in progress.

For its warehouse operations, Linfox is gradually switching to energy-efficient light bulbs that are brighter but consume less electricity.  In the office, everyone is required to switch off all main switches at the end of the workday.

There is a dedicated team to push the Eco-Drive programme.  The team is divided into various task forces to carry out different components of the programme.  Monthly meetings are held to decide each team’s duties.

On April 20, Linfox will be holding the Linfox Sustainability Conference at KL Hilton.  Talks will include topics such as the reduction of carbon emission into the atmosphere.

Linfox has identified 10 areas of sustainable business practices, which it will progressively address such as zero carbon, zero waste, sustainable transport, local and sustainable materials.

Other areas it will address are local and sustainable food, sustainable water, natural habitats and wildlife, culture and heritage, equity and fair trade and health and happiness.
