A Conducive Learning Environment

Achief concern among SPM school leavers is whether they’re choosing the right university.

In choosing the “right” university, there are so many factors to consider.  Yet, many overlook an extremely important factor – a conducive environment for studying.

At the Multimedia University (MMU), the study environment has been of prime consideration from the very day the university was conceived.

MMU vice president (Academic) Prof Dr Ong Duu Sheng says, “The student’s duty is to study.  However, a university experience should be more.  After classes is when the actual absorption and mastery of want had been taught takes place.”

Prof Ong states that a conducive environment is created with more than just physical infrastructure, “You must communicate to the students that learning can and must take place all the time, and they should make it part of their dairy routine,”  Once students make learning second nature, wonderful results spring forth, often unexpectedly.

For instance, on March 22, Chong Yen Jye and Khong Wai Howe from the Faculty of Information Technology and Nicholas Koay Zhen Lin from the faculty of Management emerged as champions in the MSC Malaysia-IHL Business Plan Competition 2010/2011.  The trio produced a business plan that combined their IT knowledge with business know-how that judges agreed could be turned into a profitable enterprise.

Another result of MMU students’ mastery of their subject matter was their dominance in Astro’s recent Nextgen Contentpreneur Awards 2010.  Out of nine categories, MMU students bagged four awards, including Outstanding Video (Victoria Muthu), Incomparable Animation (Charukphong Anuvong); Mind Blowing Sound Effects (Shahizzat Azirul Hashim) and most Inspiring Public Service Announcement (Mohd Nor Shafiq Safian).

Prof Ong comments on the success of MMU students, “All these victories did not happen by accident.  You need to continuously inculcate a conducive environment, and work hard at maintaining it.  Our students were able to compete with the best and came out on top because of, I believe, the supportive environment they enjoyed at MMU.”

While MMU students have won many awards and praise from various quarters, the university itself  has also won official recognition.  Recently, on March2 the Ministry of International Trade and Industry awarded MMU the Brand Excellence Award, one of the main awards given out at the Industry  Excellence Award 2010.

Althought the Brand Excellence Award does not specifically highlight any particular feature, we believe that recognition of our brand as a whole validates the individual elements that we have worked so hard to inculcate at MMU, including the study environment.  We hope more and more bright and talented Malaysia students will come join us in their pursuit of excellence,” says Prof Ong.

MMU’s tracer studies have revealed that over 90% of its graduate secure employment within six mons of completing their  studies.  In Malaysian Qualifications Agency, in its 2009 Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning placed MMU in the Excellent (Tier-5) rank.  This firmly cements MMU’s position among the top universities in Malaysia.

Candidates are invited to apply to MMU for the June intake in the fields of Engineering, information Technology, Business and Management, Creative Multimedia, Accounting, Finance, Law, bio-Informatics and Medical IT.
