Previously Executive Chairman of Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad, Dato’ Khalid, FCCA, is proud that his children followed in his footsteps and chose ACCA as their route towards a successful career, wherever their career paths may take them. This is because as an ACCA qualified accountant, he is assured that is children will be part of a well established profession, with specialist knowledge and skills which will ensure they are always in demand.
Faizal and Nurliyana are currently with KPMG, while Arif is pursuing ACCA’s Foundation in Accountancy.
“ACCA has been instrumental in building up my personal work experience through its learning curve. Keeping up with expectations and continuous improvements of performance has bee the key to my career progression, which requires high level of endurance, drive and resilience,” shared Faizal.
For Nurliyana, “The decision to learn accounting was made even before I knew that my father has an ACCA qualification. Prior to furthering my tertiary studies, my father saw my passion for accounting and advised me to pursue ACCA qualification as it would set a strong foundation for my accounting and finance career path. Both my parents and brothers gave me full support when I took up ACCA.”
Reflecting on the challenges faced as an ACCA student, Nurliyana shared, “Yes, ACCA is challenging, but never give up. Keep striving for excellence. Understand the subjects, rather than memorise the textbook. Being an accountant after all is about being accountable of your surroundings. At the end of the day, ACCA may bring you to higher places beyond your expectations.”
To higher places indeed, our members have been to.
Lim Geok Heng, FCCA, currently runs a successful training and consultancy firm and is well known in the profession as trainer in International Financial Reporting Standards.
Her ACCA qualification coupled with her involvement in the early stages of the financial reporting standards (FRS) implementation in Malaysia as a member of the ACCA-FRS committee, has certainly given her the credibility required to conduct her training sessions.
“ACCA has given me numerous opportunities to conduct training on various topics on FRS in Malaysia, as well as in Cambodia and Vietnam. As a result, I have been able to tap into the knowledge and experience fellow ACCA members around the globe. The exchange of ideas and information that takes place among fellow ACCA members all around the world is priceless. I am very grateful that my ACCA qualification has provided me this learning platform,” shared Geok Heng who believes that, ACCA being a global professional body, has enabled her to achieve more with its continuous updates on invaluable industry insights.
With her achievements today, she inspired her son, Yung Shu-Yuan to set his foundations strong as well. Her son, who is currently pursuing Foundations in Accountancy, talked about the accountancy blood that runs in the family.
Shu-Yuan feels that, “Considering my parents are accountants, it comes naturally for me, so I took up Accounts as an extra subject in secondary school. In my opinion, we will eventually be connected to business at some point of our lives. So why not start now and follow my successful parents’ footsteps?”
