MUSIC was blasting across the atrium floor, and band members prancing on the stage, strutting their stuff and singing their hearts out while the audience was laughing, clapping and dancing to the music. This was definitely not the usual sight one associates with a medical school but it was the annual “Noise” held at the IMU Bukit Jalil campus.
“Noise is what our music club seniors invented to promote music and performances,” said Tatsuki Abe, President of Music and Performance Club at IMU.

“It is a day in which we all call upon people who want to perform, do something different and make noise,” added the third year medical student from Japan.
Started in 2008, “Noise” is an annual event organized by the dedicated committee members of the Music and Performance Club. It gives students the opportunity to showcase their talent, and also to interact with students from other programmes. This year alone, 16 groups signed up for the three-hour event in September.
One of the performing groups is Chromatics, a band composed of seven musically-talented medical students.
According to Benjamin Chui, 21, the group vocalist, the band has been performing annually at “Noise” since 2008.
“We were in our first semester when we heard of this event. It sounded fun plus it’s something that’s non-medical related,” said the talented lad from Kuantan.
“Yeah, there’s no audition. We are just a group of people who are passionate in music,” said 22-year-old Joash Tan-Loh from Ipoh.
The band includes other 22-year-olds, Wong Yih Ren, Kuhanesh “Aku” Janardanan, Paul Lau, Ong Li Teng (the only girl in the group), and Jonathan Mark Lim, 20.
The “Noise” event is one of the extracurricular activities organized by the students. It is part of the University’s aim to nurture well-rounded healthcare professionals as well as groom graduates who are professionally competent. Students will be able to learn life skills that benefit their studies, and which will be a valuable asset to them in the future.
