Good English, great prospects
IF you’re planning to enroll for an English class anytime soon, it’s important to be aware of your English proficiency level.
A good way to gauge your language proficiency is to take a proficiency test before you begin.
Start with the ELS Placement test and if the test is easy for you, it means you are ready to start at higher level. Once determined the English proficiency level, one may want to consider taking an English course that focuses on the English learning needs.
If one is wondering about which English language programme will help them best and where they study, look no further, as ELS Language Centres offers the most extensive range of focused English language learning experiences.

The ELS Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP) is an ideal programme for students who want to learn English quickly and with effective results.
The programme allows students to significantly improve their English skills in the shortest period of time and fully prepare themselves for university study or for other purposes. Featuring nine levels, the CIEP is a complete English programme which encompasses all four skill areas; listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar and suitable for students of different proficiency level from beginner to advanced.
The classes are intensive with 28 contact hours a week and students get to reach their academic goals in a shortest time possible. During the course of the programme, students will see a marked improvement in their proficiency level.
Class size is kept to a maximum of 20 students to ensure effective participation by every student. At the end of the course, students sit for a level test (designed and validated by Chauncey Group International) to evaluate their achievement for target skills. The ELS CIEP certificate is accepted by many universities and colleges as an entry requirement in lieu of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
The Certified Intensive English Programme (CIEP) which features nine levels; basic 101 to advanced 109 focuses on academic English and is ideal for university-bound students, professionals with a limited time for study or for student who want to learn English in the shortest time possible.
Each English proficiency level is approximately four weeks in duration starting from Elementary Levels (101-103) followed by Intermediate Levels (104-106) and finally making the way up to the Advanced or Upper Intermediate Levels (107-109).
A student at the Elementary Level has limited and basic vocabulary and is only able to respond to simple questions and conduct brief conversations on everyday topics. An intermediate Level student, on the other hand, can communicate fairly effectively, comprehend most questions and statements at normal speaking speed and sustain a conversation on familiar topics.
Students at the Advanced or Upper Intermediate Level can clearly communicate their ideas in English and comprehend things with minimal difficulty. Upon successful completion of Level 109, students have been able to score around bands 6.0-6.5 in the IETLS and 500-550 in the TOEFL which translates to minimal difficulty in coping with university-level studies in the English medium.
ELS’ CIEP programme has gained recognition from local colleges, universities and institutions of higher learning as a well-structured, comprehensive programme that delivers results. Many institutions of higher learning accept ELS graduates into their tertiary programmes without an IELTS or TOEFL examination score.
Currently, there are over 25 local institutions that recognize ELS’ high academic standards and this figure is continually increasing. Additionally, more than 600 colleges, universities and career schools in the USA and a sizeable number of universities and polytechnics in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and also acknowledge the ELS Proficiency recommendation in place of the IELTS, TOEFL or other standardized examinations for their English language admissions requirement.
