TAR College is now a Platinum Approved Learning Partner of the ACCA, which shows that its
School of Business Studies has consistently met the stringent evaluation set by the ACCA for its programme.
Achieving the platinum status is testimony to its world-class teaching standards at its School of Business Studies. It is a great start to its 40th anniversary celebration this year. It was established in April 1971.
The ACCA curriculum is creatively incorporated in the TAR College Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes that offer a much broader curriculum. Such a programme prepares students to face the challenges of the global workplace.
The college has the distinction of being the only institution outside Britain and Ireland to be accorded the privilege to conduct the ACCA Internally-Assessed programme since 1987.
The Diploma in Business Studies (Accounting) programme has been accredited by the ACCA and awarded exemptions from F1 to F5 (exam papers) of ACCA Fundamentals. Such diploma graduates then proceed to the Advanced Diploma in Commerce (Financial Accounting) programme which encompasses the balance of the ACCA Fundamentals and professional level.
They have the advantage of completing the external ACCA professional level papers and the Advanced Diploma programme simultaneously.
Graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Commerce (Financial Accounting) gain admission to Birmingham City University in Birmingham, UK, to pursue the MSc in Accountancy & Finance course.
The TAR College School of Business Studies has earned a great reputation for consistently producing high achievers who emerge as ACCA prize winners and top affiliates.
TAR College Advanced Diploma in Commerce (Financial Accounting) students from the School of Business Studies – Lim Wei Chih and Loo Dan Qing – achieved outstanding results in the ACCA June 2010 examination. Lim achieved the distinction of being a top affiliate with first placing in Malaysia and 14th placing worldwide. He achieved good performance in all ACCA Professional papers (P1 to P7). Loo came out top in Malaysia for Paper P5, Advanced Performance Management, and was placed seventh worldwide.
TAR College produces students who are not only knowledgeable but are also equipped with management skills, both important components of any business enterprise. For example, TAR College management accounting and CIMA students – Chin Mei Wai, Valerie Lee Yin Wan, Teo Chooi Wey and Sean Khor Sean Teik (Team E-lites) – won the championship in the CIMA Global Business Challenge (GBC) to represent Malaysia in the GBC International Final.
Students from the School of Business Studies have consistently emerge winners, either as the champion or within the top three placings in competitions such as the Deloitte Tax Challenge, the PNB Investment Quiz, the Intervarsity Accounting Quiz and the Next Level Entrepreneurship Challenge.
Advanced Diploma in Commerce (Financial Accounting) Year 1 student Lim Liang Yew, who is the champion of the Next Level Entrepreneurship Challenge said: “The board game as a good way for me to experience the ‘realities’ of becoming an entrepreneur. It also enabled me to explore my ideas on strategic planning in gaining the most nett asset in one game.” He aims to start his own business.
The school has also collaborated with innovative companies to keep abreast of market developments. For example, with AXP Solutions Sdn Bhd, the school has incorporated the IT-based auditing software “Audit Express” in the college accounting curriculum with the aim of exposing students to the audit automation software even before graduation.
Soft skills such as teamwork and effective communication are also emphasized through initiatives such as the KPMG-TAR College Soft Skills Development programme. It was designed to help TAR College Accounting Advanced Diploma students acquire soft skills in personal development and effective communication to help them in leadership roles especially when they join the workforce.
