German Academic Venture in Singapore

ESTABLISHED in 2002, the German Institute of Science and Technology-TUM Asia (TUM Asia) is a subsidiary of the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM) in Singapore. The institute is the first German academic venture overseas.

Ranked by the German Government as one of three elite universities in 2006 and bestowed an award for excellence, TUM is a premier name in Europe and is regarded as one of the most innovative institutions of higher learning in Germany.

It is renowned for the quality and diverse opportunities it offers to students. It is dedicated to highly specialized research and providing an excellent academic education.

Founded in 1868 by King Ludwig II, TUM boasts:

-          13 faculties

-          More than 23000 students (about 20% from abroad)

-          About 6500 academic and non-academic staff

-          420 professors

It has produced a total of 16 Nobel Prize Laureates, one Pritzker Prize Laureate and 10 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Laureates to date.

Currently, TUM Asia run selective Master of Science programmes with TUM, National University of Singapore (NUS) and independent master’s programmes.

TUM Asia runs six MSc programmes, namely:

-          Master of Science in Microelectrics

-          Master of Science in Integrated Circuit Design

-          Master of Science in Industrial Chemistry

-          Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering

-          Master of Science in Transportation and Logistics

-          Master of Science in Biomedical Imaging and Computing

TUM Asia has a good mix of local and overseas students and lecturers. The programmes are conducted in English. Programmes cost from RM71460 to RM107195 (S$30000 to S$45000).

Students will be studying with some of the world’s best lecturers including Nobel Laureates, in addition to the president of TUM himself, as well as deans and professors of partner universities and reputable industry partners.

TUM Asia engages all international lecturers on an exclusive basis for the lecture period in Singapore, assuring students of direct contact with their instructors throughout the duration of their programmes.

There are three different scholarships available fir TUM Asia students:

-          Industry Scholarship

-          TUM Asia Scholarship

-          TUM Asia-DAAD Scholarship

Industry scholarships offered by renowned partners and organizations in the industry are available for outstanding students.

The scholarships may fully or partially cover the tuition fees and in some cases, a monthly stipend will be given.

TUM Asia together with TUM offers a number of scholarships to students with excellent recommendations, academic and industrial background. The scholarships will reduce the tuition fee by 20% to 100%.

The TUM Asia-DAAD Scholarship project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This scholarship is part of the “German Study Programme Abroad” programme. DAAD Scholarships are awarded to student with outatanding academic results and good moral character.

Science and technology

Another vital mission of TRUM Asia is to coordinate research programmes where scienctists and researchers from both Germany and Singapore can work together for the advancement of science and technology.

In June 2010, the TUM CREATE programme was launched as an extended arm of TUM Asia.

TUM Asia and the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF) signed a research agreement on the TUM CREATE Centre for ElectroMobility in MegaCities. The research programme will focus on developing innovative systems that incorporate safety and reliability with functionality and energy efficiency in electric vehicles.

Since its inception, TUM Asia has produced over 250 graduates, coming from various countries in Asia and Europe such as Singapore, China, India,Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, France, Germany and many others. The majority of TUM Asia graduates now hold senior positions in multinational companies in either their home countries or overseas.

In Singapore, TUM Asia graduates are working with corporate leaders such as BASF, Broadcom, Rohmax, Glaxo Wellcome, Infineon, LantiQ, Novartis, Siemens, Sued-Chemie and Sumitomo bekelites Singapore.

There is also a significant number of graduates who are currently pursuing their doctoral degrees with TUM or with other universities in Germany and the United States.
