Parents want a good place for their children to study medicine: a place with affordable fees, comfortable hostel, food and other facilities, without compromising on the academics. One such place is Kursk State Medical University in Russia. It is located in the heart of Kursk City, about 450km south of Moscow.

KSMU was established in 1935 and is one of the five top universities recognized by the Public Service Department and the Malaysian Medical Council of Malaysia in 2001, and globally by General Medical Council (UK) among others.

There are students from over 36 countries studying at KSMU. Brushing aside Russian ideology, language barrier and the rough climate, Malaysia parents and student made their choice to enroll at KSMU. The degree course has been conducted in English since 1994, at the Foreign Medical Faculty. The university has a foreign student population of 1350 out of whom half are Malaysians.

KSMU has highly qualified, well-trained, dedicated lecturers, and has produced thousands of medical doctors since its establishment. Some of them have become doctors of sciences, doctors of philosophy, surgeons and physicians well known in Russia and overseas.

Malaysians student are recruited Maggaram Sdn Bhd (formerly operating as Mangaram Enterprise since 1997). It was founded by Dr V. Sathiyananthan who was the leader of pioneer group of 36 students who went to KSMU to study medicine. He was one of the first four to graduate as doctor in July 1999. Through his untiring effort and determination, he invited the then Malaysian ambassador to visit the university and led KSMU’s delegation to Malaysia to apply for recognition.

Maggaram Sdn Bhd has recruited more than 1000 Malaysian students since 1997. It also recruits students from the Maldives, Myammar, Singapore and Brunei. Maggaram has agents in Sabah and Sarawak.

The Yayasan Sabah has sent 31 students and the Matriculation Department, 50 students. Many have since qualified. Some 450 students recruited by Maggaram have since graduated from KSMU.

Maggaram provides students with services like obtaining letters of offer, study visa, and documentation from the Ministry of Education, Wisma Putra and Russian Embassy. In Kursk, it helps with hostel accommodation, registration, visa extension, banking and travel arrangements from Malaysia to Moscow.

KSMU is preferred choice because its tuition fee (inclusive of hostel and other facilities) is only RM103000 for the full course of six years. An estimated RM700 for food and other expenses is more than enough for a student’s monthly expenses. Contact Maggaram at C-19-02, Dataran 3 Two, 2 Jalan 19/1, 46300 Petaling Jaya.
