NSL Ltd (formerly known as Natsteel) began operations in the early 1960s as The National Iron and Steel Mills to support Singapore’s nation-building efforts in infrastructural and residential development.

Over the years, the company has diversified into other businesses and it is now a leading industrial group in the Asia Pacific region with core businesses in chemicals, engineering and construction products.

Headquartered in Singapore, the chemicals group is a leading lime and specialized refractory products manufacturer as well as a leading environmental solutions provider. The engineering group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of container spreaders.

The construction products group is a leading player in precast concrete, premix mortar and building-related products in the region.

The NSL scholarship scheme, launched in the early 1980s, aims to provide opportunities for outstanding young minds with exceptional potential and leadership skills to be nurtured and groomed as the group’s next generation of leaders.

The group, listed on the Singapore Exchange, believes in building people and polishing them to their finest grade.

“We are able to give our scholars a multi-faceted exposure to develop their skill sets. The diversity of businesses within the group provides ample opportunities for exposure, personal growth and career advancement”, said NSL Ltd chief executive officer Dr Josephine Kwa.

With NSL Group’s diversified businesses and joint ventures in nine countries, NSL scholars can look forward to a geographically diversified exposure across a wide spectrum of industries, gaining experiences that are practical, challenging and fulfilling.

NSL scholar Ho Kok Yong who graduated from his French-NUS double-degree programme, joined NSL Group five months ago as a research and development engineer.

“I applied for NSL’s scholarship as its profile of being an industrial group with operations in various countries and fields looked to be able to offer broad-based and exciting career opportunities,” he said.

“Only two months into the job and I was asked to attend an overseas conference in China regarding energy supplies. In dynamic China, I got to network with industry players in the volatile energy market. I may be nowhere near being a subject matter expert, but being entrusted with such a critical task at an early stage of my career is definitely challenging and exciting.”

The NSL Scholarship is opened to students with outstanding GSE O-Level/SPM and GCE A-Level/STPM or equivalent (International Baccalaureate or polytechnic results – at least three distinctions).

Students with outstanding results currently studying in recognized Singapore or Malaysia universities are also encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will be required to serve a bond varying from two to five years depending on the duration and value of the scholarship awarded. The bond may be served in NSL or any other related company as directed by the company. For details, visit www.nsl.com.sg/scholarships.html
