Such one-year programmes are designed to expose students to their field of interest and prepare them well for tertiary studies. Among the advantages of the programmes are:
Developed by university academics
All Taylor’s Foundation programmes are designed and managed by the respective schools in Taylor’s University. As such, the curriculum is designed to prepare students for their first year of undergraduate degree studies in the school.
Contains discipline-specific subjects
The syllabus of each foundation programme includes specialized subjects related to that particular field of study to equip students with strong fundamentals.
Include invaluable hands-on learning
“Learning by doing” is a philosophy inherent in the curriculum of all programmes. Students are regularly challenged to put their knowledge to test by completing actual projects. In FIS, students engage in the integrated Science Project, in which they must apply research tools and scientific concepts to develop a proposal paper and prototype of a project that relates to biology, chemistry and physics.
TBF students participate in the Young Entrepreneur’s Day, a yearly event that allows them to implement business theories and raise funds for charity. In the various levels of English for College Students, students are involved in assignments, ranging from organizing events to creating short videos.
University environment
All programmes follow a tertiary style of learning. The teaching process promotes two-way interaction and sharing of knowledge and resources among students.
Learning also takes place beyond classroom walls such as through field trips, interaction with working professionals and participation in competititions.
Over the years, students and graduates of the Taylor’s Foundation programmes have achieved great success.
Taylor’s University vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Hassan Said said such success stories are testament of the high-standards in terms of curriculum, lecturers and teaching and learning initiatives.
“Students who join one of our foundation programmes can be assured of a positive experience that will enable them to not only gain a strong foundation of their subject area but also strengthen their soft skills, to equip them to thrive in the subsequent tertiary environment.”
Several Taylor’s Foundation students share their positive experiences.
“The in and out of class activities during my Foundation in Communication gave me a taste of what college projects are like. It works as an intermediate to a degree. It also gave me an avenue to network – not just among classmates, but with working professionals,” said Leonard Leao, 2008 FICM graduate who obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Communication and Media Management).
“Being involved in the Young Entrepreneur’s Day taught me how to manage a business effectively and apply marketing strategies. I also got to enhance my leadership and communication skills. What was even more meaningful is the fact that I could give back to society,” said Zetty Erisa Buang, 2008 TBF graduate.
“The Foundation in Science provided me with fundamental knowledge for my tertiary education. The exposure to many hands-on engineering is all about and the confidence to excel in my degree studies,” said Song Cher Pin, 2009 FIS graduate who obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Chemical Engineering.
“If there’s one word to describe the Foundation in Computing, it would be ‘complete.’ I learnt a lot, from hardware to software, IT and statistics. It definitely gave me a head start in RMIT degree programme,” said Ivan She, 2006 FIC graduate who obtained a Bachelor of Computer Science.
