UNDER the Transformation Programme, the government has begun to equip 21,000 preschool teachers in order to raise the quality and professionalism of early childhood education in the country.

“Building a strong educational foundation for our children is top priority for us,” said Education Ministry Teacher Professional Development Sector, deputy director-general Datuk Asariah Mior Sharuddin.

In line with the Malaysian government’s plan, Ng Toke Ping, 23, aims to become a qualified and well-trained early childhood educator, who knows and understands ways to educate children effectively and creatively.

After completing her Diploma in Early Childhood Development at SRI College, she stayed on to pursue her first degree in Education Studies (Early Years), which is a 3 + 0 programme from University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.

“This specialized degree enables me to be equipped with knowledge and practical skills in educating young children. I have developed higher self-esteem in facing them and their parents. My friends were surprised by my insightful input when we talked about ways to counter misbehavior of their nieces and nephews,” said Ng who works at local pre-school centre.

Lavinia Yong Jay Lian, 19, took up the Diploma in Early Childhood Development offered by SRI College because of the love and passion for it. Currently working as a teacher in a local kindergarten, Lavinia’s passion to educate children was triggered while watching her little nephew grow up.

“Now I am more calm and patient with children. And I love listening to them as they speak their mind to me,” said Lavinia.

Her dream is to obtain her Master’s qualification in Early Childhood and establish her own preschool centre in future. Her advice to SPM school leavers is: “Be sure of what you want in life. Becoming a professional early childhood educator requires hard work and passion.”
