What makes children at the St. Nicholas Montessori Centre (SNMC) stand out? The learning experiences they enjoy allow them to develop self-confidence and independence. these traits were evident during their graduation concert on Oct 30, when they has to perform and speak in front of over 200 people in the multi-purpose hall of SEGi university College.
The little ones aged from two years from four centres bravely took their places on stage and completed their performances before their proud parents. The children were from SNMC Malacca, USJ 13, Klang and Bandar Utama. SNMC has a particular theme for each academic year, and the theme for 2010 was History.
This theme gave the children the opportunity to explore and experience topics that include natural history, mankind’s evolution, inventors who changed mankind’s life and the solar system. the richness of their study was well captured in their 12 performances.
The exposure they gained from participating was invaluable. They gained not only a great sense of achievement but also self-discipline, self-confidence and self-esteem – intangible assets which form an essential foundation for personal success. Most importantly, they has a lot of fun in the process.
A parent commented that her four-year-old daughter has become much more independent since enrolling SNMC.
The philosophy employed at SNMC includes play as a form of learning. Modern early childhood education experts have proven that play in its many forms is not only learning platform, but the perfect vehicle for a child’s complete and balanced development.
SNMC offers beyond just kindergarden or childcare services. Its curriculum ensures children develop physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
The Montessori approach aims to develop a healthy and psychologically fulfilled child confident enough to approach the challenges of life, while cultivating positive study habits and an enthusiasm for learning. Children at SNMC are also well prepared for primary school as they participate in special preparatory classes in various areas to better prepare them for the challenges ahead.
They are also taught many values and lessons of life that enrich and strengthen their character, such as compassion and kindness.
Children at SNMC also have the great advantage of learning three different languages – English, Bahansa Malaysia and Mandarin. Having early exposure to all these languages through effective learning methodologies gives them very strong foundation and linguistic development.
The Montessori curriculum also includes the project approach, which is highly recommended by Dr. Lilian Katz, an international authority on early childhood education.
Through project work, children will gain invaluable basic learning skills and social skills. Mastery of these skills at an early age would give them a lot of confidence and encourage a positive attitude towards life-long learning.
